Portraiture is a tricky thing in the antique world... While many photographs of the 19th century, minted by the freshly named "Camera Obscura," allow us to date their creation by the environment and clothes worn, portraiture had a long history of costume, historical emulation, and "influencer behavior."
Who can, afterall, resist a moment out of the ordinary- and that is exactly what this rare Fortune Teller would have communicated to her original 19th century audience! Converted from an antique brooch, we have paired her with a replica shank in 14 karat yellow gold. The finely painted lady is wearing a costume associated with the countryside in Portugal. She is gesturing with a shell in her hand, perhaps tempting passersby with cockles and clams, or their fortunes, all around. Around her neck is a string of pearls or seashells, with a wee coral branch attached! Don't you just love it when your jewelry wears jewelry?! A wonderful, one of a kind find, she is sure to bring delight wherever you take her!
