A superbly rare French brooch featuring a porcelain painted miniature of Zeus and Almatheia In Crete. Amaltheia, a figure of Greek and originally Cretan mythology, was the wetnurse of Zeus; king of the Olympians. I’ve never had the pleasure to see this scene depicted in miniature before; especially in the peculiar positions chose by the artist.
Framed by rose cut diamond foliage and gold scroll form accents, the ornamentation of this piece echoes similar brooches from the Burgundy region of France, from the early 19th c. The pin is set with three sizable foiled, flat cut garnets; two deliciously dainty flowers and a dangling tear drop.
