Miniature masterpieces for the curve of your ear!
This pair of 19th century micromosaic earrings are a rare treasure indeed; not only for their beautiful construction, but their storied history. Hand crafted circa 1860 in a stunning 20 carat gold, these earrings were made in Rome at the Vatican Mosaic Studio. This studio was renowned for its mosaic work, from large-scale projects (such as Michelangelo’s mosaic dome at the heart of Vatican City) to small-scale mosaic and micromosaic jewelry.
These earrings are not only one of the best examples of micromosaic work we’ve had, but they are hallmarked on the reverse with the Vatican Workshop assay – sharing the images of one white rose, one red, a pink heavy-petaled rose, and a single forget-me-not in the central medallion. The artistry is impeccable, and even for its small scale, the level of detail creates a scrumptious feast for the eyes!
Also notable are the twisted details on the “trapeze” stations that suspend the larger medallions from the top. The Archaeological revival detail of these earrings is all encompassing, evoking Etruscan-style sensibilities in its design and detailing. The resulting silhouette is extravagant and vibrant, making this a vivid statement piece for whomever wears it!
A museum-quality adornment, and a perfect addition to any antique jewelry collection!
