The Victorian fascination with taxidermy and animal jewelry has increasingly become a source of intrigue for modern eyes, which are more familiar with it in the context of goth kids and hunters, rather than elegant mementos capped in buttery gold. In some instances it perplexes us; for one of the most popular Halloween costumes for women in the era was a bat, where they would don fabric capes cut into wings and affix real bats as headpieces in their hair, and others which captivate us, such as this 1860’s Indian tiger claw, considered to be one of the most prized forms of animal jewels left to us from the 19th century.

This large 5.5mm tiger claw capped and tipped in 14ct gold is truly a marvel with an amusing boule at the tip. This example is unlike other claws we have offered before, unpolished and allowed to boast the natural variations and layers within, which are reminiscent of a bright variegated marble. This will undoubtably be a cherished addition to any collection, and a pendant you'll reach for again and again.
