It seems a universal truth that opals contain a certain magic. Believed by the Ancient Greeks to bestow prophecy and protection, cherished across cultures as talismans of healing, and celebrated in Europe as the “stone of hope.” Queen Victoria herself adored the gem, famously gifting opals to her daughters, ensuring its place as one of the 19th century’s most beloved stones.
This brooch, crafted in 15ct yellow gold around 1890, centers on a magnificent cabochon white opal of remarkable proportion. Its shimmering play-of-color shifts with every glance, framed by a pierced cut-out design and a decorative bar setting that gives the piece both elegance and structure. Worn at the collar by day or glimmering under candlelight at night, it’s a jewel that needs little else to make a statement.
