Nostalgia for the Middle Ages and the Italian/French Renaissance brought back a renewed interest in the symbolic powers of gemstones, especially toward the end of the 19th century, in Europe and the US. Rings were commonly made to celebrate birth stones and add subtle color to match a bride's eyes or temperament- sapphire has been a long beloved gemstone for its cool, watery tones. And from time to time, the French were persuaded to export some of their best examples, particularly in the ever-so-coveted pink tone that no one else could quite replicate. This gorgeous hallmarked sapphire and pearl band is a delicious example of that French, Napoleon III period craftspersonship in the genre of gem-forward finger rings. 

This ring benefits from rose cut diamonds, a delicate crossover form that was beloved in French jewelry at this time, and a generally excellent countenance on the finger- she stacks or can be worn solo!
