Religious medallions are an integral part of the French jewelry wardrobe. Growing exceedingly popular during the second half of the 19th century, they represented a marker or gaming chip in the life long journey to an eternity of happiness in the next world. Acquired at baptisms, communions, marriages, and above all, pilgrimages (read: medallion collection missions,) medallions were not only acquired by those that completed the religious objective, but minted for loved ones as offerings to the saint most honored by the performance of these journeys and rituals.

A gorgeous rectangular Mother Mary Medallion in 18ct with lilies on the face and the mother presented with a halo. This gorgeous example is likely from the 1920's and in excellent shape.
