The Austro-Hungarian empire dates between the 1860s to the 1920s and was one of the most powerful western empires in the world. Today, Austria and Hungary are two separate countries, with their own different identities and jewelry history. Nevertheless, the combination of the two nations in this 80 year period saw some of the most bedazzling and out-of-this-world creations we have ever laid our eyes on!
Holbeinesque jewelry, a popular fashion that was characterized during this time, was very popular in Germany and the Catholic countries of France, Spain, Russia, and Italy. Holbeinesque was a type of Renaissance revival jewelry that rose to prominence in the 1870s, and literally meant “in the manner of Hans Holbein” who was one of the most prolific German portrait painters in the 16th century. These pieces were highly texturized, colorful, and large, with mannerist and mythological ornamentation. For instance, you could find fantastical beasts of hybrid human-animal forms, griffins, putti, and Christian symbols like crosses and famous Christian legends.
This colorful ring is a perfect example, depicting a portrait of the Christian legend of St. George, a martyr and the patron saint of cities and countries, slaying the dragon who had plans of killing the princess that was, as legend tells it, later rescued by St. George. A beautiful ring with a beautiful story, this ring is a great addition to any collection, religious or otherwise.
