The legend of Saint George and the Dragon tells of Saint George taming and slaying a dragon that demanded human sacrifices. The story begins with a dragon who extorted tribute from villagers. When they ran out of livestock and trinkets for the dragon, they started giving up a human tribute once a year. This was acceptable to the villagers until a well-loved princess was chosen as the next offering. The saint rescues the princess and slays the dragon. The legend spread rapidly through the Byzantine culture in the 12th century, when it reached the Western world, and became a favorite tale of chivalry and a popular subject for the visual and decorative arts.
This large carved shell cameo brooch is a wonderfully detailed piece depicting Saint George upon his horse, spear poised to impale the nefarious looking dragon at his feet. Set in 14 karat yellow gold, it has a concave surface, where the shape of the shell was incorporated into the relief carving.
Full of drama and beautifully crafted, it is worthy of a frame and placement of honor on your gallery wall as well as in your treasure chest. Or, wear it on your lapel and become a Legend to all antique jewelry lovers!
