A magnificent museum-quality piece that fits in the palm of your hand!
Words almost can’t describe this stunning 19th century piece. Crafted circa 1860 in white conch shell, this piece is an outstanding relic of the Grand Tour era – displaying the pocket-sized statuette of the Goddess Athena, standing regally at attention with her shield at her side. Carved and presented in 360° splendor, this statuette was perhaps the handle of a letter opener, or was displayed slotted into an inkwell.
This letter opener immediately captures the gaze – not only for its exquisite construction, but for the beautiful brown dappling alongside the front of the statuette. With her shield depicting a fantastical image of the sun, it almost looks as if the sun’s rays have gleamed onto Athena’s person, staining her shield and clothes with sunspots. Truly a sight to behold!
This piece is also an exceptional example of decorative art in miniature. As was common with other Grand Tour jewelry, the craftspersonship on this letter opener is intricate – and beautifully blends the artistic sensibilities of the 19th century with classic Greek mythological motifs.
Indeed, we can only imagine that this remarkable Athena has made each and every one of her proud owners feel as though they’d purchased a remarkable statue for their desk. It certainly is one of the best examples of the Grand Tour era we’ve ever seen!
For the art historian and antique connoisseur alike, this is a rare and radiant treasure that would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
