Eclectic and Unique!
This Shakudo locket originates circa 1890, crafted in 9 carat gold and featuring these iconic Japanese Shakudo panels. Shakudo is a technique adopted by Japanese craftsmen, in which gold and copper is treated to develop a black patina that resembles lacquer. It makes for a striking look that is unlike any other.
And indeed, this locket is notable, with impeccable craftwork along each panel, and a unique clasp to open and close the locket. This locket is also unique as it displays features we’ve never seen before! It’s common for Shakudo panels to display different images – often creating a miniature vignette or pastoral scene.
But these two Shakudo panels are a matched pair, depicting identical scenes of vases spilling with flowers atop rickshaws. It is a unique construction, which truly stands out whether you choose to wear this locket alone, or as part of an ensemble.
A perfect addition to any antique jewelry collection!
