Coral cameos have been a beloved hallmark of historical jewelry for centuries- the ancient world appreciated coral as a natural cameo material as it was more difficult to carve than shell, but not quite so complex as chalcedony or other hardstones. The 19th century saw their revival especially in vivid red or orange cameos but the Rose Creme color of angel skin coral is perhaps the singular most coveted color today. This outstanding cameo features a partially veiled florally decorated figure. With her escaping curls and delicately fluttering veil, she is an outstanding example in this rare material with an etched frame, classic to the American mid 19th century manner.
