Romantic Period Miniature of Cupid after Raphael | En Grisaille | 18ct Gold Ring | French c.1830-1840
Tossing the most capricious glance over his left shoulder, Cupid is here shown between savage arrow attacks on mortals, daring to make the viewer vulnerable to an even worse fate than unrequited love — a moment of adoration for the pantheon's cruelest player of mortal heartstrings.
Beautifully executed, this Romantic period portrait miniature is en grisaille but with a dramatic aquamarine painted ground all around. In the past, I've only encountered en grisaille pieces with grey, beige, or pink grounds — never this rare, immaculate blue that seems to bring the very sky to life. In heavy 18ct gold with an eagle head hallmark on the band, this all-original piece is one of the finest miniatures of this period I have ever seen.
