Victorians adored traveling, and one of their favorite ways to keep the memories of their travels alive was through souvenir jewelry. The jewelry ranged from sophisticated and elegant, like examples of art history or revivalist design – or kitschy and cute, using natural motifs like insects, shells, and even small birds!
Nautical and nifty, this 19th century Victorian Pearl Scallop brooch is a rare treasure indeed, and a perfect example of such novelty jewelry! Crafted circa 1890 in 14 carat gold, this darling brooch is constructed in the shape of a miniature scallop shell.
The shell displays intricate detail, with fine lines etched along the interior of the shell, and a smaller auger shell nestled at the bottom. Arranged along the top of the shell are dainty miniature pearls, which glint sweetly against the gold. In the very middle of the shell winks a slightly larger centerpiece pearl, with a natural irregular shape that elevates the already oceanic silhouette. Simply gorgeous!
This brooch might have been made as a vacation souvenir at a beach town gift shop; it possesses a very playful vibe that just feels like a little wink! A delightful addition to any antique jewelry collection!
