The use of cameos in necklaces, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and rings is one of the most prolific jewelry motifs used throughout the Victorian Era. Though they pre-date the 19th century, for the travel-loving Victorians a cameo was a favorite, possibly representing a meaningful souvenir of a Grand European Tour... And on that topic, many faux materials were used to create cameos for every budget. This cameo is one example of a "fake" that might very well have taken just as much effort to create as a lava cameo-- but is significantly lighter, easier to wear, and tells its own story.
Set in a sumptuous, scrolling 14ct frame, we first understand that this piece was meant to be treasured, perhaps even more-so than many of the lava cameos, which are often set in gold fill. The Bacchant featured here was made in a most fascinating process of having been sculpted in hand, by wax, then moulded and hand cast, in powdered glass, then polished by hand to finish with this amazing lava-look. She is so rare, I've never had another one like her. I've weigh'ed her, tested the glass, and tripply confirmed as this is such a strange thing to discover. I love her and believe she will be a landmark addition to any collection.

Condition: There is a chip to one corner, that has been repaired, likely in the 19th century, but it is not to the central figure. She has been priced accordingly. Minor age wear associated.
