A museum quality piece, with beauty that immediately captures the gaze! This 19th century Pink Conch Shell Cameo of Demeter may as well have come from Olympus itself – its delicate artistry and masterful construction makes for the most ethereal and whimsical silhouette.
Crafted in 10 carat gold, this cameo brooch depicts the stunning visage of Demeter against a blushing pink conch shell setting. Surrounding the conch is a fleur-de-lis inspired framing upon which sits several tiny and dainty pearls. The pearls glimmer sweetly, and add a touch of oceanic essence to this piece.
In the cameo portrait, Demeter gazes out, her face half-turned as if lost in reverie. Her face is engraved with impressive detail, her wisps of hair curling around her face like a halo. It almost feels as if you can reach out and feel each individual strand of hair!
Atop Demeter’s hair is a braided crown of wheat. This is a notable detail, because Demeter is the goddess of agriculture. Along with her daughter Persephone (Goddess of Spring) Demeter’s sacred plants include wheat, barley, and mint. Grains are Demeter’s ultimate domain however, and she is never depicted without at least bearing an ear of corn, or a crown of wheat nestled against her tresses. In this cameo, she proudly displays her crown, announcing her title as “Grain Mother”.
Another notable detail of this cameo is the hoop earring in Demeter’s ear. When was the last time you saw a cameo with a hoop earring? For us, not often – which makes this a rare and special portrait indeed.
Whether you’re an art historian or an antique connoisseur, this cameo is certain to become a beloved addition to any collection!
