A remarkable Victorian treasure!

Crafted circa 1860’s, this malachite cameo pendant is an outstanding early archaeological revival piece, depicting ancient Roman elements in its design.

The first thing to note is the impeccable construction: beautiful gold haloes this rich veridian malachite stone, upon which this beautiful cameo is engraved in stark relief.

What’s interesting about this cameo is the subject. A beautiful Roman woman gazes out at you; however, unlike typical cameos, this woman does not have any of the typical characteristics that a goddess would have (such as a shield, bow and arrow, or helmet). Nor is this dame wearing 15th, 18th, or 19th century garb – clothing we would usually see adorned on an aristocratic woman.

No, the woman on this cameo is in fact nude! Displaying an unadorned neck, and a beautiful intricate hairstyle. With these details, we believe this cameo depicts an important woman of ancient roman empire – perhaps a Roman Senator’s wife? How curious!
