Playful and delightful!
Crafted circa 1860, this fun French Pastoral Enamel En Grisaille is a magnificent Napoleon III example. Featuring bright 18 carat gold, enamel, and – the pièce de resistance – mother of pearl, this en grisaille depicts a romantic pastoral scene:
A young man reclines with his bagpipes, having stopped his serenade to address us, the viewer. And beside him, a beautiful woman has paused from her stroll to nonchalantly offer a laurel wreath of marriage. How curious!
There’s much meaning in this brief vignette. Just who is this man? And this woman, for that matter? And will the bagpipe bard accept the maiden’s offer of marriage? Or will they just carry on their merry way? Part of the fun is in the mystery, and this en grisaille does a beautiful job of bestowing that playful aura.
The craftwork of this piece is impeccable, with each delicately rendered detail standing out in stark relief. And the gold detailing is equally lovely – Greek key motifs are etched into the gold, which juxtaposes nicely against the en grisaille, creating a decidedly whimsical silhouette.
A wonderful addition to any antique collection!
