Outstanding Charles X Period French Tricolor Gold Chain, circa 1825
One of the most historically important chains we have had, this rare and remarkable three-color example has the superb fittings of the ever-so-brief Charles X period, making it such a collectible moment in French jewelry. Characterized by a modernized revival of eighteenth-century Rococo as envisioned in the 1820s, the period marked the return of Louis XVI’s brother to the throne during the second Bourbon Restoration. Though six years may not seem long for a monarch, the Charles X period represents one of the most concentrated moments in nineteenth-century French design. The garter motif, made all the more sensual by its tension connection to an O-ring, is accompanied by three layers of chain presented on either side. Originally 10 inches, it has been tastefully extended to 15 inches with 18ct links, making it a delight to wear.
