A remarkable relic of the Grand Tour era!
Words almost can’t describe the beauty of this Sicilian coral set; it’s a vibrant treasure trove of the most gorgeously rendered coral jewelry we’ve had the pleasure of coming across! Crafted circa 1850 in 14 carat gold, these pieces are – of course – Italian in origin, featuring the mythological elements commonly seen in Grand Tour pieces of this time.
The brooch in particular, is a wonderful example, featuring a dazzling bouquet of roses and foliage, upon which a putti head is nestled in the middle. Dangling from the bottom of the brooch is a anthuriam like flower with a berry dotted alongside its top.
The earrings display similar imagery, with fluffy petaled flowers haloing the sweet cherubic faces of putti.
These elements – and the putti heads in particular – are an excellent illustration of the belief that ancient Gods still existed in the flora and fauna of unkempt gardens, while churches and cathedrals housed God (in the Christian sense). Even in Rome, where the Vatican reigned, pieces like this were highly sought after and purchased as reviving relics of the ancient world.
