Aigrette is the French word for the egret – or, as we know it in English, the lesser white heron. The gorgeous feathers of this bird were often used as adornments in hair and on hats, with its popularity reaching its peak in the 19th century.
By the early 20th century, the aigrette had evolved into a delicate hair ornament often encrusted with jewels – less formal than a tiara, but just as beautiful and elegant.
This immaculate garnet aigrette is a treasure from Elle’s own personal collection. Crafted in 12 carat gold, this gorgeous example dates back circa 1870, and possesses a dazzling array of the most vivid crimson-red Garnet stones. Stunning!
A true feast for the eyes, this beautiful Aigrette also features a stunning “starflower” or lysimachia borealis. With a large, bursting fern, and a bejeweled bow, culminating in heart like droplets, this jewel is couture for the hair, and is reminiscent of 18th century hair flowers!
A magnificent addition to any antique jewelry collection!
