Vibrant and magical!
This stunning amethyst Celtic Cross is a remarkable example of the ancient Celtic Revival style, made most popular during the Victorian era. As with other decorative art trends, revivalist jewelry was highly en vogue during the 1800’s - and featured romantic designs that evoked a far-gone ancient culture.
Celtic crosses in particular are rich in both symbolism and artistry. Crafted circa 1870, this Amethyst cross is constructed in the traditional design – featuring a Latin cross with a halo around its center intersection.
The halo itself – which is crafted in a vivacious 15 carat gold – features an intricate Celtic knot motif, speaking to the Celtic interpretation of the Holy Trinity (the 3 points of the knot referring to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit).
The star of the show is of course, the mesmerizing royal purple Amethyst. The deep purple hue has a mystical depth to it, elevating the already mystical silhouette of the cross. Each segment of Amethyst is bezel set, creating a gilded framing that feels especially Victorian.
A truly outstanding specimen, this cross is a wonderful find for both the antique jewelry connoisseur and art historian alike!
