Elegant and timeless, this 19th century demi parure set is a rare treasure.
American in origin, this set dates back circa 1860’s-1870s, and features a set of black enamel drop earrings and an identical black enamel brooch. The artistry is impeccable: the earrings bear a beautiful curved geometric backing that terminates into delicate shepherd hooks. In the center of each earring is a large onyx sphere that gleams mysteriously in the light. Along the bottom dangle equally stunning onyx oblong stones, creating an eclectic and highly feminine silhouette.
The brooch is equally stunning, featuring a larger interpretation of the earrings’ design, and a black enamel center back that, when paired against the spherical onyx center stone, appears almost reminiscent of an eye. How curious!
This set demonstrates a sensuous departure from the dour post-civil war fashions of the American visual lexicon in the 1860’s. Gone is the strict, wartime geometry of right angles and violent edges; instead, the sloping arabesques and gleaming pendeloque drip drops of onyx are reporting for duty.
This parure is one of our favorite things we have here at the Curio. A magnificent addition to any art historian or antique connoisseur’s collection!
