A chunky intaglio signet ring featuring a horse, a knight, and a shield that boasts three stars in the center. An interesting onyx cut, intaglio rings are carved into the negative spaces as opposed to cameos, which are carved into the positive space.
Signet rings were typically made entirely of gold or featured carved gemstones or intaglios, such as this special example. Especially during the 19th century, people could mark a document with these rings. Wax was melted onto documents and the top of the ring was impressed into the wax, leaving a clear and permanent mark. To denote the ring’s wearer, signets were comprised of identifying marks, such as coats of arms, monograms, family seals, or initials. Perhaps this meant something to the previous wearer, or it may mean something to you today!
