An outstanding example perfectly in line with the work of the French Deuxième Empire — scrolls in 18ct gold, a heraldic symbol expressed in rose cut diamonds, and a singular carved lapis shield that anchors the whole composition with quiet authority.
While the exact family referenced remains a mystery, the initials "P.D." carved on the reverse of the lapis add a layer of personal history that only deepens the piece's appeal. Three natural pearls of the period are set with original gold caps — a telling mark of originality — alongside .11ctw of rose cut diamonds. Note the hook at the bottom of the brooch: an original detail that creates a wonderful styling opportunity, inviting its next custodian to suspend additional diamonds, fine gemstones, or a pendant below. This is a very high quality specimen of an extraordinary historical moment — made right before the Franco-Prussian war took the artistic wind out of the French sails of jewelry making, this shield brooch is all the more precious for it.
