A dainty and darling 19th century treasure, with a timeless allure!
This French Double Clover Club ring is an iconic Napoloeon III example, beautifully displaying the Napoleon III aesthetic that really defined European jewelry in the mid 19th century. Crafted circa 1860 in a glimmering 18 carat gold, this ring features an elegant double band connected by miniature triangle and rhombus shaped diamonds.
On the top band of the ring is an arrangement of delicate turquoise stones, leading to a clover-shaped cluster of 3 miniature pearls. On the bottom is a similar design – except it is a delicate arrangement of pearls that lead into a clover-shaped cluster of turquoise stones.
This clover motif is interesting, as it hints at a popular recreational activity of the French 19th century: gambling. Gambling was a favored pastime of the wealth during this second 19th century Golden Age; this ring then, pays homage to the fun and merrymaking of this type of game.
Jewelry that represents card symbols are exceedingly rare to find, and the two clovers (or clubs!) displayed are a prominent, playful motif indeed. A wonderful addition to any antique jewelry collection!
