French Diamond Bow Brooch | 5ctw | 18ct White Gold | Post-Art Deco c.1930s
When I first encountered this brooch, I was not only taken aback by the remarkable amount of material here — my French associates have a phrase for this moment: « il y a du matériel là ! » — but additionally by the absolutely textbook exemplary silhouette this jewel cuts.
Almost like a bow tilted, as though italicized, this exceptionally heavy 18ct brooch would be at home in an exhibition on post-Deco jewels of the 1930s. Speaking to Cubism, post-modernism, and the heavy velvet draping so much favored in the fashion of this period, this would be an outstanding addition to the collection of a curator interested in exploring the quieter corners of the first half of the 20th century. Pre-World War II, post World War I — the weight and splendor of this brooch could not have come from any other moment in time.
