A majestic historical pendant of the early 20th century features a mother of pearl carving depicting the Virgin Mary. A 18ct gold jewel comprised of the finest French craftspersonship, this pendant is a standout among religious medallions of the era. I’ve seldom seen so glowing an example- invisibly set with a 32 pearl halo around the peculiarly tombstone shaped token.
My favorite design element of the jewel is the two dimensional, etched rendering of the receding apse of a cathedral behind the virgin, who is carved in the positive to create a tactile point of worship for the wearer. Objects like this were collected throughout the life of a French woman, as she honored her religious journey at various markers of importance. This luxurious memento would have been a stellar addition to her jewel box.
