I came by this piece earlier this year and have seriously considered hoarding it ever since. A substantial yet delicate Roman ring, this exceptional hand-hewn antiquity maintains a fabulous detail to the hexogonal setting with boule details. This original ancient example speaks to the many revivals that ancient jewelry enjoyed in the 19th century, as a natural next progression; it is not only the genuine article, but an excellent example of a Roman second century example. With a, seemingly original, intaglio of a stag with multitudinous antlers, this seal ring would have served an ergonmic function as a wax signature for the wearer. We have seldom seen a better example. 

Jewelry of the ancient world was more often than not amuletic in nature, and this ring is no exception. Set with a stunning carnelian agate, the symbolism is potent: the stone would have warded off the evil eye, rendering the wearer immune to malicious intent. A very special ring indeed.
