Striking and magical!
This is truly a rare and impeccable French cross. Crafted circa 1860 in a rich black onyx, this jewel features beautiful craftspersonship and a gorgeous silhouette.
But the magic of this jewel is in the symbolism held within. Adorned with classic French Catholic symbols—sterling forget-me-nots, budding thistles, and lily of the valley create a lovely bouquet—this piece is tied together at the base with a 14 carat golden bow.
What’s notable is the shape of the cross. It is depicted in perspective, “transient space” – no doubt to symbolize its existence in the spiritual and physical realms. It evokes a sense of transience, inviting devotion and prayer. A truly extraordinary work.
And a magnificent addition to any antique jewelry collection!
