A magnificent 18th century treasure!
This rare Garnet Paste Intaglio ring immediately captures the gaze. A conversion piece, this ring is set on a vibrant 18 carat gold band, and features a golden cup at the back of the intaglio – creating a beautiful glow behind the vibrant red garnet glass!
Which speaking of, this garnet glass intaglio is truly a breathtaking centerpiece. Carved in sharp relief is what appears to be the scene of a bacchanal; the setting is rich and romantic, so reminiscent of a Greek painting. We can see a river, where a putto is running amuck with a dolphin; there are figures with vessels atop their head, and they are gathered in what may in fact be a marriage scene – implied heavily by the swagged marriage garland draped over a corner of the composition. A dreamy pastoral scene, if we’ve ever seen one.
And a perfect treasure for the discerning collector and art historian alike!
