Niello is the art of darkly ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-esque decoration made of alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal is, in fact, more substantial than enamel, as so many examples have been passed to us by the hands of time. It was and still is a difficult technique to execute so chains such as this one are always sought after!

A remarkable Belgian Niello chain that exemplifies the two finest links we find; the niello jester link, striped with the dark ornament, and the rose gold washed sterling link-- and this one celebrated not only with a Niello dog clip, but additionally a gold T-Bar, hallmarked for 9ct. The addition of this t-Bar helps us to underscore the way that niello has always been prized as an equal in quality and detail to solid gold jewelry.
