This 19th century post-civil war pendant is sweet and darling, featuring the breathtaking hand-painted visage of a dove.
Crafted circa 1865, this American pendant is set in 14 carat gold, with a delicate organic wafer setting. The hand-crafted dove image in the center of this piece is a masterful display of artistry; hairwork and sepia paint combine to create a somber scene: a small dove sitting, wings flared, atop a lone branch cast in shadow.
Atop the painting are the initials GP, with a signature signed for 1865. And around the miniature portrait are 14 beautifully wrought star apliqués . Combined together, the details reveal that this pendant memorializes a departed loved one, ushering their safe passage into the heaven.
An extremely sentimental piece, with outstanding quality craftspersonship and a palpable intimacy. A lovely treasure for any antique jewelry collection.
