A rare survival from the Directoire period (1795–1801), this négligée pendant is set with approximately 2.6 carats of rose-cut diamonds in silver-topped gold. The elongated, articulated drops and restrained foliate structure reflect a pivotal aesthetic shift—away from the exuberance of the Rococo, and toward the measured clarity that would soon define the Empire style.
Jewels from this brief moment are few and far between; what I love most about this negligee is the amount of surface area that the diamonds consume; very little of the face of the pendant is left uninhabited by glinting rose cuts. On the reverse, the secret of the piece is revealed; it could be entirely deconstructed and used as drops-pendant parts for other pieces in your jewel box. Innovations like this were prevalent in the Directoire and Empire period, setting up the 19th century for the prevalence of the parure and other modular jewelry innovations.
