An outstanding French late 19th century Art Nouveau brooch with a phenomenal natural, oddly shaped pearl that has been set to represent a rosebud. According to Charlotte Gere in Victorian Jewelry Design, the daring decision to depict single blooms and broke from the mid 19th century tradition of floral sprays, and large bouquet brooches – was a figment of the Art Nouveau artists' imagination. This particular brooch not only underscores the then avant-garde idea of celebrating a single flower – it chooses to follow the renaissance tradition of imagining pearls as clouds and finding the exact artistic representation they can embody; in this case, a rosebud.
The magic of the rosebud is the implied motion. Much like Henri Cartier-Bresson's capture of the decisive moment, which would become the defining thesis of early 20th century street photography, this brooch was far ahead of its time – daring to not even show a blooming flower, rather one that was simply a bud.
Envision it worn on a gentleman's jacket the morning of his wedding; a pearl and diamond boutonniere of a flower forever preparing to bloom.
