A rare and unique archaeological revivalist treasure!

When one thinks of a beaded necklace, the first thing that often comes to mind are gem or pearl beads. But here, we have a remarkable gold beaded necklace, straight from the 19th century! Rare is it that we come across such a high caliber example – especially one with such fine construction!

Crafted circa 1870 in a vibrant 10 carat gold, this necklace is peak Archaeological Revivalist design. The silhouette is elegant, classic, and timeless, but upon further look one realizes just how incredible these gold beads are!

The collar of the necklace has been “bloomed”; this means the gold has been made to become more yellow. This is accomplished through an acid bath process; once the gold is put into the bath, the mattifying acid eats the alloy of the exterior layer of gold – leaving only an extremely high carat sheen, which emulates the look of 22 carat ancient gold.

Need we say again: simply remarkable!

Though it is constructed in gold, this necklace is reminiscent in design to the pre-Raphaelite coral beaded necklaces most often worn by young ladies and painted muses. Coral was believed to have protective healing properties, which made it the mainstay of most pre-Raphaelite fashion; however, the nobility did occasionally construct their beaded necklaces with gold and gems, to further illustrate their wealth and power.

Either way, this necklace is certainly a stunning addition to any antique jewelry collection. Perfect for the antique connoisseur and art historian alike!
