A singular serpent, rendered in radiant 14ct gold, coils in a perfect circle at the center of this American Etruscan Revival bangle, circa 1870. Etruscan revival jewelry is known for a fine usage of caning, a lost (until revived by the Castellani brothers!) technique of slowly adding small wires of gold to create ornate details like the dozens of individual circles on the snake's back. This is a museum worthy example.

The bracelet’s surface glows with a bloomed finish, a technique wherein the gold is acid-washed to remove alloys from the surface, leaving behind a softly matte and uncommonly rich golden hue. This was a technique we often find in british jewelry of the period, and on rare ocaision, in its beautiful American counterparts. At once scholarly and sensual, this bangle is a rare example of Gilded Age craftsmanship at its most refined.
