In 2019, I realized that ancient jewelry slipped through the sands of time to modern hands for one simple reason. Neither the intrinsic value of the gold and stones nor the reverence for millennia of existence kept the adornments of antiquity alive and well in the jewelry boxes of those lucky enough to acquire them. No; you'll know, if you've ever touched a 20ct ring from Byzantium, or a flipping scarab specimen from Egypt- or even a Roman chain with hellenistic stylization- ancient jewelry literally never goes out of fashion because it is absurdly wearable.
During the pandemic, I acquired a Roman amethyst ring that I rarely, if ever, took off because it was just so comfortable. Thus, when I thought about what I, as a curator of wearable decorative art in miniature, had to say, with the designs I minted for others to adopt into their jewelry boxes, it was the jewelry of the ancient world that most profoundly spoke to me.
This kitty cat ring is one of the first Curious NYC artifacts, featuring a hand wrought cat in the style of Bast emerging from a 20ct buffed band, in the style of a hand hammered troy ounce ring.
