A breathtaking adornment from the mid-19th century!
This French snake ring is one of the most unique pieces we’ve had here at the Curio. Crafted in a gleaming 18 carat gold, this ring features incredible construction – just marvel at the beautiful cross-hatching along the snake’s head and body! It’s not a realistic reconstruction of scales, but the artistic flourish gives a stunning depth and mystery to the silhouette. The bared fangs - rendered beautifully in gold - are also a super fun and whimsical detail!
Equally stunning are the dainty ruby and diamond stones encrusted along the center of the snake’s head. The vibrant ruby juxtaposes beautifully against the stark white of the diamond, making this ring glitter no matter how you choose to wear it! The flat body of the snake further enhances the wearability of this piece.
This ring’s design speaks deeply to the esoteric interests of the post-neoclassical 19th century mind. Snakes were a powerful symbol of eternity and the life cycle; therefore, they became a popular motif for Victorian-era jewelry, which often focused on the cycle of life. The muses of Ingres’s painting were often depicted in snake jewelry, showcasing their eternal beauty, yet mortal fragility. An interesting peek into the 19th century mind!
A magnificent addition to any antique jewelry collection!
