An adornment worthy of a museum!

This stunning 19^th century Sardonyx Cameo is a testament to Napoleon era French jewelry design. Crafted circa 1850-1860 in 18 carat gold, this brooch features a vibrant cameo of a aristocratic woman, set again a delicate peachy-hued sardonyx mount.

The 18-carat gold mounting is also exceptional, with a gilded design brimming with fine detailing, and scrolling foliate motifs. The silhouette it creates makes it feel as if it should be hung in the halls of a palace!

 This brooch is such an excellent example of the French interpretation of Renaissance revival. One could argue that one of the first classical revivals was during the Renaissance; a love of cameos re-emerged in 15^th century Europe, taking hold and taking the decorative arts world by fire into the 18^th century. The trend reached a fever pitch during the Industrial Revolution.

As the French are known for their love of the classical world, with Napoleon’s Empirical tyranny, it is no surprise to see this motif having returned under Napoleon III’s reign. This cameo feels very reminiscent of the portrait painting of Jane Seymour by Hans Holbein.
