17" Old-Cut Diamond Rivière in 18-Carat Gold and Sterling Silver, 18.45 Carats
An outstanding English riviere from the second quarter of the 20th century, with wonderful old cut diamonds— mostly old mine cuts! Chunky and exceptionally clean, SI1-2, they are white JK color with open, sizable facets. This is the perfect riviere for the lover of rare old diamonds in-situ… especially if you are looking for something in a higher carat range.
I’ve worn this example every day since acquiring it, the quality of the setting is wonderful, with a weighty amount of gold and silver, and it lays flat for me on the skin and on a turtleneck. The most common question I’ve received about this Revere is “how do we know it is old?”
The first leg of our journey to authentication lies in the hallmark, though I have not been able to definitively identify it definitively, I am certain that it is from the first half of the 20th century – and furthermore, all of the stones are different. The star of the show- the largest girl, is a step cut diamond, while, most of the other diamonds are old mine cuts, with a few old euros rounding out the back. Modern rivières do not favor this type diamond diversity– as the stones are most commonly all be cut to a formula.
Even later vintage revere’s tend to seek uniformity, if not between every stone, at least and type and shape of stone. This is a really rare piece of history, and while I have had one other example that is similar – I’m very excited to offer this one now!
