The Industrial Revolution had long tendrils of reach that impacted the jewelry industry not only in the mechanization of producing pieces in the 19th century- but through the globalization that defined fashions. Chinoiserie was the tradition of mimicking the themes and stylizations of expensive exported objects from China, particularly during the third quarter of the 19th c in England and the US- this bracelet is an excellent example of the theme. Here, we find a beautiful, fully detailed bangle with two different themes; on the face a gorgeous bamboo vignette shows a small stylized sailboat shown, almost through a window, atop bamboo stalks, with a swallow; the reverse shows a swallow observing a garland of branches and flowers, similarly rendered in the Chinoiserie manner. This bangle is a textbook example of this moment in jewel fashion.
