Art Nouveau Medallion by Armand Bargas of Woman Wearing Bat Bodice in 18ct Gold, French c. 1895
Oh to wear a bat for a bodice!! This is one of only two examples in solid 18ct gold of Armand Bargas’s work that I’ve been able to find; and the only of this subject matter known in the market at this time.
Certainly referencing Sarah Bernhardt and her infamous bat hat, this wonderful medallion has that certain je-ne-sais quoi that absolutely ravishes the modern viewer about Art Nouveau jewelry. After the wildly viral publication of my article on how Art Nouveau will conquer evil, I’ve been exceptionally interested in the women of Art Nouveau jewelry; this Armand Bargas medallion found me in a state of delight with her beautiful plumbed hat, and tilted bat that seems to comprise the bodice of her gown.
Art Nouveau celebrated natural forms, and the female body was the temple at which the movement worshiped. This medallion is a beautiful example. Please note; it is very light and weight – 1.63 g!
Armand Bargas was a prominent medalist in late 19th century France, he exhibited a frame containing four medals with depictions of women the French Academy of Artists in 1895, likely around the time that this medallion was produced.
