Mourning jewelry dates back to the early 17th century. However, it exploded in popularity during the Victorian era, when Queen Victoria began wearing tokens of remembrance for her beloved late husband Albert. The Victorian era was highly sentimental, and many chose to remember their loved ones by crafting talismans of affection to be worn close to the heart.
This wonderful 18th century mourning ring is one of the most beautiful sepia pieces we’ve ever had. This ring is notable for the fact that – unlike other mourning jewelry of its time, which usually incorporated the hair of the deceased – there is no hair work here, only sepia which is toned and shaded.
This ring displays the somber scene of a grieving woman at the grave of her beloved. It is a truly intimate scene: the woman sits with her head in her hand, a sorrowful expression on her face. The attention to detail is breathtaking. The woman’s clothing drapes elegantly over her figure, making her appear graceful yet fragile. The mourning woman also sits beside a beautifully decorated urn, lost in thought – or grief.
Engraved on the back of the portrait is the name R. Symons, who died at age 35 on August 14, 1782. There is clearly a strong level of care and intention made into this portrait; this is one of those rings that, when you really examine it, becomes more and more beautiful.
Equally beautiful is the history behind this ring. It is likely that this ring was either once a brooch, or possessed a different shank. It has been converted into the treasure you see today, with a beautiful vintage 14 carat gold band. It is most likely an American craftwork.
Between the stunning artistry and deep sentimental value, this ring is indeed a beautiful addition to any art historian or antique jewelry lover’s collection!
