A museum quality piece for the small of your finger!
Originating circa 4 CE, this extremely rare intaglio ring is a sight to behold. The carnelian intaglio itself is an impeccable specimen; the image is rendered in stark relief, and creates a phenomenal juxtaposition of color and texture. No matter how you hold your hand, this ring commands attention!
The carving is truly phenomenal, and poignantly depicts a soldier expressing gratitude to his deity. The image of the soldier holding a smaller figure is often associated with an offering, or an appreciative prayer towards his God for success in battle.
Rings like this became popular during the height of the Roman Empire, and were used heavily by the ruling class and Roman elite and military officers to show their status, and to act as a talisman of luck in their endeavors.
A truly magnificent example, perfect for the art historian and antique collector alike!
