A beautiful 19th century treasure!
Crafted circa 1870’s in a delightful 14 carat gold, this cornucopia brooch is dainty but mighty. The construction is wonderful, with a design that exudes botanical flair and understated glamour. Especially notable is the fact that there are 3 shades of 14 carat gold, adding depth and dimension to the silhouette.
This brooch feels rustic but elegant in the sweetest way, perfectly exemplifying the artistic sensibilities of post-civil war America. Also sweet is the delicate miniature pearl in the brooch, which glimmers beautifully against the rich vibrant gold.
This bar brooch speaks directly to American Aestheticism, particularly as it visually manifested on the west coast in the 1870’s. With a finicky affinity for fretwork, West Coast Aestheticism – or the East Lake Movement – was renowned for its penchant for geometry and a stylized realism. Further exemplifying the bounty in over-adornment, this cornucopia brooch is a textbook example of this special moment in American decorative arts.
A delightful addition to any antique or art conoisseur’s collection!
