While the main objective of foiling was to increase the color and brilliance of a stone, it was also used to impersonate another gemstone. Beginning in the 17th century, diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires were used in both rivieres and in esclavage necklaces. For those who could not afford these gemstones, rock crystals that had had the backs covered in foil could create the effect of these precious gems.
This Victorian example features four vivid pink crystals, almost seeming like water droplets. In between the stunning crystals are delicate, stunning pearls, creating an "X." Additionally, this brooch is convertible in the way it serves as a pendant and features an extension fitting.
