Sensuous and sentimental!
Crafted circa 1870 in a glimmering sterling silver, this Victorian book chain and locket is a wonderful archaeological revivalist example.
The chain in particular is striking – with sizable boule links, and a wonderful star pattern on the textured surface of each chain link. The resulting silhouette is eclectic and eye-catching, with a subtle romanticism.
Furthering the romanticism is the gorgeous matching locket, which has some truly fun design elements. Along the center surface of the locket is a beautiful interlocking beaded design dotted with miniature silver boules.
Open the locket and one sees the faintest impression of a portrait – a man in uniform stands at attention, hands in pockets as he gazes pensively out. One wonders who this man was. Was it beloved relative? A sweet paramour? We cannot say for certain – but what is clear is that he held a place of esteem to original owner. A truly intimate detail!
Between its sentimental value and gorgeous construction, this piece is a lovely addition to any antique jewelry collection!
