Amethyst is said to have been the emblem of Matthew, one of the Twelve Apostles. In the Roman Catholic Church, amethyst is affectionately monikered the “bishop’s stone” and worn by the highest-ranking members of the clergy.
With its high reverence in the Christian faith, it is no surprise that amethyst is the centerpiece of this magnificent 19th century cross necklace.
Crafted circa 1880 in a vibrant 15 carat gold, this cross is a stunning example of English Archaeological Revivalist design, with a silhouette that feels distinctly Georgian – but a construction that is Victorian all the way through.
The stars of the show are of course, these darling oval-shaped Amethysts. The six stones are arranged exquisitely into this unique cross shape, further emphasizing the whimsical silhouette. The stones also have a rich hue that brings depth and an air of glamour, making for a memorable visage that captures the gaze.
A delightful addition to any antique jewelry collection!
