Gate bracelets became popular during the Victorian era. They are called so due to the fashion of the chain style of interlocked panels. The panels emulated the gates and fences of English country estates and manors. Gate bracelets have a large heart-shaped charm with a lock and key, which fastens the bracelet. The romantic Victorians felt they symbolized love and fidelity.

Often, the bracelets were given to a lady when her gentleman was due to be absent for a long period of time, such as serving a tour of duty in the military or traveling abroad for business. The bracelet was fastened around her wrist, thus securing her attachment to him in his absence.

Thankfully today, we have discarded such proprietary actions, but we can still embrace the beautiful craftspersonship of this lovely piece, enjoying its delicate feel upon our wrists. Perfect for any sex to give or receive, and of course to wear as a symbol of the freedom to love!
